Good-bye, Sirius and Good-bye, Remus...

Feb 21, 2010 15:45

This may not really be the last chicken post, but today I sold the flock. It makes me sad, actually, but Holly, the woman who bought them, was super cool and very much a chicken person like me. They're going to a good home! Craigslist is pretty damned cool, man!

However, rounding them up was, let's just say, interesting. Some of the chickens were easy to catch, which isn't too surprising considering that they are accustomed to being handled. The Faverolle, the Red Stars, the Turkens, and some of the Barred Rocks and Australorpes came right to us and let themselves be caught. Sirius immediately came to me and I carried him all the way to the car without a box. I don't carry them by their legs either, I cradled him like a baby. He didn't fight, but it made me sad to leave him. Remus? Well, Remus bit and scratched Holly, evil WereChicken that he is. All three of the bantams and one Barred Rock (the one I call "Pita" for Pain in the Arse) took off for the woods and we spent over thirty-five minutes chasing them about. Most of my birds were rounded-up fairly easily, but than bantams were hard as hell to catch. In facy, we only got two out of the three of them.

Oh, and this was funny, Holly (who is my new Farmville friend, LOL) and her boyfriend just put the chickens loose in the back of their Jeep Cherokee. Yeah, there flattened boxes everywhere to keep the inevitable poop off the car seats, but we returned to the Jeep to find a Turken in the front passengers seat and a Barred Rock at the (or, rather on the) steering wheel. It was pretty amusing.

I'll have some pics tomorrow.

I'm glad I have more chickens waiting for me in Taos, but Buster Henry will never be as cool of a rooster as Sirius and Remus. In fact, I greatly fear that I have lost a lot of my "cool factor" within the fandom, for giving-up my fandom roosters.

And speaking of fandom, here are today's recs from hp_nextgen_fest :

Manipulation in the Workplace: Twists and surprises are the name of the game in this charming little Rose-centric story of the perils of having a job. The fic is rated R for some sexy little bits, but it's really more about Rose's plight as she navigates the frustrating world of working for Draco Malfoy. I have to say that this is one of the most perfectly in-character Draco's I've read in a long time. We get some nice bits of Pansy and Seamus, too!

The Unforcasted Storm: Did you ever think about the fact that Bill and Fleur's kids would be a little bit Werewolf as well as a little bit Veela? Apparently, I hadn't until I read this brilliant take on the situation. "The Unforcasted Storm" is Louis Weasely's story about being a sensitive part-Werewolf/Part Veela who is in love with his cousin (James Sirius) and his best mate (Scorpius.) He finds himself in a very difficult position during a "Lost Weekend" type thing at Malfoy's mountain lodge. (Yeah, a bit of Gossip Girl flair for you there, too!) What ensues is a very compelling peak inside Louis' head and some very delightful views of James Sirius and Scorpius. You really need to check this one out and anyone who'd every been to one of these so-called illicit weekends can totally relate. Even if you haven't, it's a good read!
