In Dark Angel JA played a well-to-do piano teacher (or, I guess he played a guy playing a well-to-do piano teacher--details, details); I can see his Michael being a slightly less I Am the Romantic Love Interest of This Flashback version of that! Sigh, that would have been fun indeed. I'll also go ahead and wave my "Jeffery Donovan for the Archangel Michael" flag.

My favorite things about Michael? I'm a Dean H/C-er by trade, aha, so I think my bottom line is his massive potential for mindfuck and chaos, probably. But in practice I just really like the sheer number of viable incarnations he's taken on in fandom. Cop out answer, I know, but how many characters have that power? I can't remember who it was, but someone once made the distinction between terror and horror. Terror is fear. Horror is fear without knowing the cause of it. That mystery was just so electrifying for me, combined with the loose canon that was S5 Winchesters. Michael put a name to that horror, sure, but in the end a name is only a name. He can be anything!

Problem #1 with Crowley or Dick Roman as major villains, I think. We know them far too well. They were threats, more or less, but they were never horrifying. Michael was.

What about you? :D p.s. yessss fandom interaction makes me so happy!

Ahh, excellent.

GREAT point. Hm, which makes me wonder if that's why the writers never did that much with him, because to put a face and personality with that potential for horror would inevitably make it less scary.

Like you, I think Michael is way better potentially than in actuality in canon, but until we started talking about this, I never thought about him that much. I just love the angels and wished they'd made them both glorious and terrifying, you know? Not unlike god!Cas. I think they were afraid the angels were going to be too soft/pretty if they didn't make them as evil and badass as demons, but they could have been even so much more terrifying if they were ... I don't know, SOMETIMES compassionate, that calm and compassion that comes from knowing you have so much more power than the person going up against you. If they were more inhuman and wonderful, they could have been really chilling (if the writers absolutely insisted on making them the bad guys). You know, when they first introduced angels to the show, I was so excited because I thought there would finally be an antidote to all the horror and darkness, but nope, it just got worse. :-]

But then they did and it was like, hmmm, okay. XD Maybe Jake Abel--bless him--just can't carry that gravitas? Idk. I know I keep pulling out quotes, but I think this one sort of gets at what you're talking about here, albeit from a slightly different angle. It's by Irish playwright Martin McDonagh:

"We’re all cruel, aren’t we? We’re all extreme in one way or another at times and that’s what drama, since the Greeks, has dealt with. I hope the overall view isn’t just that though, or I’ve failed in my writing. There have to be moments when you glimpse something decent, something life-affirming even in the most twisted character. That’s where the real art lies."

And now that you've said it, I think you're exactly right about that whole demeanor. Calm compassion---mmmm, yes, I love it.

I think the introduction of the angels did shift the feel of the Show, just from...horror and darkness, to a different brand of horror and darkness. XD And given the effects its wrought on everyone to date, it's an even more dark and horrifying brand. ...Whoops? XP
