Sam's sacrificing himself by jumping into the pit was supposed to be seen as preordained as soon as he was born. And then the show was supposed to end. And then...oops.

The demon blood was Sam's way of doing good, but as he gets more into the addiction, his ability to tell the difference between good and bad gets difficult. Sam is easily manipulated, like Castiel, but without the hubris. Just idle thoughts here.
