The Winter Soldier

When I was young and VCRs were first a thing, my dad kind of randomly bought me a couple of movies (Princess Bride and Roxanne), and I really loved The Lost Boys and bought it for myself, and I watched those movies several times, often just as background, because you know, I never liked Roxanne that much. Still, I owned it, so I watched it.

In my twenties, I owned several movies people gave to me. (Why yes, now that you ask, I pretty much only own movies people gift or hand down to me. I'm just not that into movies, generally.) Despite several of them being truly great movies, the only one I watched multiple times was Thelma and Louise, because when I was going through a really rough period, I could watch it and think, well, at least my life is better than that! Plus, it's just such a great movie. Patty and I still do lines from that one. (Are we the only people in the world who do lines from Thelma and Louise? Probably.) So many of them are just so great, though! "I ain't apologizin' fer shit!" "I bet you called us 'beavers' on your c.b. radio, didn'tcha?" "Yeah! Sure did!" (The way he says it is just so priceless--good for anytime you want to say rudely, "Yeah! Sure did!".) And, "Do you love me?" "Uh ... yeah!" But that was the only movie I've really rewatched since I was about 17, and I've still only seen it maybe ten times in my life.

I guess I've watched most SPN episodes at least twice, some several times, but y'all already know about (and relate to) my obsession with that.

And then Captain America: Winter Soldier came along. I've seen it probably 20 times this year. (Just watched it again tonight.) It's the best-made movie I've ever seen in my life. Every detail is perfect. I can hardly conceive of the work that had to have gone into making it so good. (I AM incredibly excited for CA: Civil War ... but trepidatious. Very trepidatious, especially since Marvel movies have imo taken a big dip in quality ever since CA: WS. Agents of Shield is great, though, what I've seen of it.) If only WS were a series I could anticipate new episodes of, instead of a movie I can only get more of by watching it over and over. On the other hand, I get to watch it over and over!

And gah, Bucky. (I just may have dug deep into Sebastian Stan's filmography, so impressed was I by his performance in WS. He is universally great in every role I've ever seen him in, one of those actors who really disappears into a role.) What a character the like of which you scarcely ever get to see, and what an actor bringing him to such vivid life. (I may have done a couple of paintings inspired by him as well. I needed an outlet!) BUUUCKYYY .... Sometimes when I watch WS, I just watch his parts, which are all! so! good! I mean, look at them!

He's just amazing. Also, he is not bad-looking. Just my opinion. Let me look at those gifs again just to make sure ...

I'm not generally one for fight scenes, but this one is incredible. Massive spoilers, if you haven't already seen it:
