Hi!

I wanted to drop a comment to say I really liked your fic. It's good to show appreciation, isn't it?

I haven't actually watched the show since the end of Season Six, but I've read episode reviews and such, and I think you really captured both of the characters' headspace. It was nice to see Sam's dreamworld as we never got one in the show; it's such a shame because djinns make for pretty awesome plot devices.

Oh, and the scene with Mary, John, Jess and Dean all asking Sam what he wants was very creepy and well written.

but in the end I think much would be improved by Sam realizing he needs Dean's need for him as much as Dean needs Sam.

I actually always felt that Sam's issues with his family weren't just the life or the family business. I always felt that a big part of the problem was their father who treated them like soldiers while at the same time treating them like kids who couldn’t be left alone with anything, or how Dean (from Sam’s point of view) was on their father’s side all the time, or how Sam wanted to be equals with Dean, as in, protect him like Dean protects Sam but Dean (and the screenwriters) never really lets Sam, or how their father and especially Dean risked their lives all the time, or how he couldn’t remember his mother and felt like an outcast and a freak in his family. (I actually once wrote a fic somewhat regarding this!)

But yes, the codependency runs strong in both of them. And I don't think the codependency in and of itself is the problem in their relationship. It's more about the constant lies and how badly the screenwriters make them communicate with each other.

(I can't really get worked up about this season's conflict because I feel it's so manufactured it's painful, because in just a few words there wouldn't even have been an issue.)

And after reading your fic I feel like they both have such terribly low self-esteems that they only see the faults and mistakes in themselves while at the same time they hold this idealized version of each other in their minds, but because of their low self-esteem of course they end up doing a bunch of shit that hurts the other (and naturally this is bound to happen at some point, but because of the low self-esteem the issues get bigger than they need be), which in turn feeds their insecurities and lies and problems in their relationship.

That made much more sense in my head, to be honest.

Maybe it is codependent, but if it's the right thing in a relationship and consensual for everyone involved, it can be the best--nay, the only--way to proceed. You know, if it works for them, then it does; that's all that matters.

I agree with this :) I've actually always hated the show's use of word "normal".

But anyway, this was a very good fanfiction. Thank you for writing and sharing it! I'm sorry I got so lengthy there.
