Stuff and stuff and stuff

Dunno why this made me so freaking happy: I found this pet store where if you buy from their website, it's all free shipping and there are brands they don't feature in stores, and the amount of food will last my three cats about *counts* two to three months. It fits in the budget and then some (I got the brand Wysong, since discounts are awesome). ( Read more... )

I hate the judgemental types. We have gone through several different brands of grain free kibble for the kitties. The first one we were on proved to be unaffordable (Inova Evolution, however it's spelled). We then tried a couple others, which were also pricey. We ended up on Taste of the Wild Venison & Smoked Salmon, which they adore, and is within our budget.

But hey, sometimes money gets low and the cat food runs out and we have to go with cheaper alternatives. It's not pet abuse to feed "lesser" quality foods. It's better for them if you can afford the better stuff (especially as in our experience, they actually eat less of the expensive stuff, even though they gobble it with glee) but if you can't, then you can't.

People should learn to mind their own goddamn business. But people seem to get fucking whacked when it comes to pets. We had one of our cats, whom we had not been able to spay yet (finances; let's just say that the vet we were with back east wanted $250 for spay per cat... we had thought the prices had just gone up and were supremely surprised to find out that, out here, it's between $50-80 depending on gender). The week that I was calling to make an appt for a spay procedure? Actually, I correct that, the very day... we realized she looked overweight, checked her, and she was pregnant. (little beast had gotten outside for like an hour; we'd heard some caterwauling but assumed it was a fight as she came in all fluffed up).

So, since spays are a lot more complicated, and thus more expensive, with a pregnant cat, we decided not to take the risk. We knew that my parents would let us keep some of the kittens, my parents would probably take some kittens, and my partner's co-workers were all excited at the idea of kittens.

I got a drive by comment by someone who was a member of a community I was on, who also was on stupidpetowners. She went off on a rant about how we were horrible pet owners for letting her get pregnant, not having her spayed as soon as we found out, and contributing to shelter cats not getting homes.

Now, as far as the last one, my state is pretty strict about adoption and a LOT of people go through Craigslist rather than a shelter because they don't want to deal with having to go through the shelter, the state SPCA, home visits, and a price tag of up to $200 for an animal. The kittens wouldn't have been taking shelter cat spots.

ON TOP OF THAT... Ras had two kittens. In the post that she raged at me, I had said that WE WERE KEEPING BOTH KITTENS. But apparently, we were still taking spots from shelter cats, because obviously we would have gone out and adopted... yeah, no.

We don't have the two kittens anymore because they bonded strongly to my ex (one of them is registered as his service animal), and as much as we have issues with my ex, it wouldn't have been fair to the kittens. I do trust, for all his bullshit, that he will do everything for those cats.

After that comment, I put my journal to friends only entirely. It wasn't the first drive by snark I had, but to be berated because my cat had two kittens that we were intending to keep (and apparently that made us Evil Pet Owners) was the last fucking straw.
