The one who seduced you, screwed you over, broke your heart in a million pieces, and laughed about it. Heroes. Come on, it seemed so awesome at first. The characters! The stellar ensemble cast! The backstory! The potential! Then started the abuse of character. The unabashed ret-conning. The complete refusal to present coherent plot lines. I told my friends, "He's not usually like this. When you get to know him, he's really great. Just keep watching. It'll get better." LIES! I stuck with it until the end, and still dearly love many of the characters, but am everlastingly disappointed in the show's wasted potential.
The old flame you don't see very often any more but whom you still really enjoy getting together with for a few drinks and maybe a pleasant nostalgic romp. Oz. I don't know what it is about prison shows, but I've always had a soft spot for Oz. I mean yeah, it's full of the most deplorable human behavior you can imagine, but that just means we fit together well. And it's a great excuse for crossovers which land people in prison!
The mysterious dark one whom you used to sit up with talking until 3 AM at weird coffee houses and with whom you were quite smitten until you realized s/he really was fucking crazy. I don't think I've ever really declared a fandom too crazy for me. Is that a bad sign?
The one you spent a whole weekend in bed with and who drank up all your liquor and whom you'd still really like to get with again, although you're relieved s/he doesn't actually live in town. Harry Potter. That thing is a juggernaut. The one Potter story I've ever done is a remix, and even that felt like teetering on the edge of a very dangerous abyss.
The steady: Star Trek. I've liked various incarnations of Trek since I was a young 'un, but didn't feel fannish about it until Star Trek XI came out. There's so much existing canon that there's plenty to play with, character and AU-wise, with the promise of more to come. Now we have a very comfortable open relationship.
The alluring stranger whom you've flirted with at parties but have never gotten really serious with: Supernatural. We've had a few flings, and I like the characters, but I just can't commit to it. In fact, I don't think I've ever written a Supernatural story that isn't a crossover... Yeah, no, I haven't. That seems strange, considering I've written more than 50,000 words featuring Supernatural characters...
The one you hang out with and have vague fantasies about maybe having a thing with, but ultimately you're just good buddies: Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I think James Marsters' cheekbones and Benedict Cumberbatch's cheekbones should get in a fight. And by fight I mean those two should make out. But seriously, folks. I love so many characters on Buffy, but I've never felt terribly author-y about the show. But come on, Spike and Angel are totally doing it.
The one your friends keep introducing you to and who seems like a hell of a cool person except it's never really gone anywhere. Inception. Done a crossover, read some great fic, but I'm a little intimidated, honestly. Dreams are haaaaard!
The one who's slept with all your friends, and you keep looking at them and thinking, "How the hell did they land all these cool people?" Hm. Dr. Who, maybe? Perhaps I just need to watch more episodes, and I'll understand.
The one who gave you the best damned summer of your life and against whom you measure all other potential partners. X-Men. This is the fandom of my childhood. I read vintage X-Men comics (from the 1950s), watched the X-Men cartoon (which is now available streaming on Netflix!!!), and then read more comics. This is the world I'd make up stories about when I was but a wee child and didn't know what fanfic was, so how can I help but love it still?
The one you recently met at a party and would like to get to know better: . X-Men First Class. I'm predisposed to like X-Men (see above), and there's so much hotness and angst and man-love going on in that movie, I just... Yeah. I've already got an icon, it may be a matter of time before we start making out in dark corners.
The old flame that you wouldn't totally object to hooking up with again for a one night romp if only they'd clean up a bit. CSI. I did go back and finish a CSI multi-part fic, like, three years after I'd written the last chapter. I haven't watched the show in years. We've really grown apart. We want different things. I'm really happy for him, really.
Your hot new flame. Sherlock. Is it still a new flame if we've been getting it on for nine months? Wait... nine months... Uh oh.
Now tell me about your fandom flings! I love hearing about people's fandom histories, because if I know you through one fandom, it's fun to discover we have more in common!
