May 03, 2009 18:16

Title: Noise
Day/Theme: May 3 - One’s company.
Series: Chrono Crusade
Character/Pairing: Joshua, Fiore, Aion (mentioned). Could be considered vaguely Joshua/Fiore, but isn’t blatantly shippy.
Rating: G, although I at least attempted to make this somewhat creepy, so, this is your warning.
Word Count: 1,022
A/N: For 31_days. This is probably less of a true story and more of a snapshot/experiment. I was testing myself to see if I could write from Joshua’s perspective. Any feedback, particularly on characterization, would be appreciated?

Finally found him don't be such a wet blanket be quiet what was I doing putting it off said I meet her here--

Joshua felt his stomach churning as he placed a hand on the counter in front of him and held it tightly. Somewhere in that mass of static and noise in his head were his own thoughts. He knew they were there, somewhere, and the noise hadn’t gotten that bad yet-

--we'll find him so glad I found that book lets the voices in bank’s closed apologize--

He really had been feeling better. It wasn’t a lie-Aion made it a point to be honest when he could, and Joshua followed his example to the letter. Besides, lying to Aion wouldn’t do him any good. All he ever did was try to help him. He was his master and had saved him from being--weak pitiful little teacher sure is strict I am his hate her--chained to a bed for the rest of his life. Why wouldn’t he be honest to him? So when he said he felt like he could go into the city today, he meant it. It had started off being one of his better days. He couldn’t understand why the noise was flari-

Stopping the noise would be simple. So, so simple. But Aion said not to. It would call too much attention to him. Aion always said no, but even Aion couldn’t understand, the noise would tear through his skull like a new set of horns if these ants didn’t stop making it, and yes Fiore said to stay here but he would, he’d just make sure it was quiet…

It had to stop, it had to stop, he could stop it, he would stop it--He lifted his throbbing head to look at the center of the room, stretching his fingers towards the people there, his lips curling into a childish, twisted smile as-

A cold hand caught his, pulling him forward through the crowd of people. He struggled at first, the static in his head getting louder and louder as he was pulled past dozens of people with dozens of staring eyes, but a voice that wasn’t in his head but spoken aloud instantly caused his body to relax. “We’re going home now, Master Joshua,” she said evenly.
“Fiore?” Joshua noticed vaguely that they were now outside of the sandwich shop he had been in, and Fiore was pulling him down the street towards where they could board a trolley.
“I’m here,” she responded. He tightened his fingers around her hand, his grip stronger than a normal human would feel comfortable with. The maid, however, showed no signs of feeling any pain.

“The noise got bad again,” he said as they walked. Fiore’s heels made a click-clack sound against the sidewalk.
“I know.” Her voice was steady, but there was a vague tone of regret in her words. “I should not have left you there alone.”
“But you needed to shop. You didn’t get carrots, did you?”
“Next time, I’ll leave you at home or take you into the store with me.”
“You did get carrots.”
The girl’s frowned ever-so-slightly. If Joshua hadn’t learned to read her expressions, he probably would have missed it. “They’re good for you, sir.”
“But I hate carrots!” he grumbled, spitting out the word ‘carrots’ as if it were a curse.
“They’re good for you,” Fiore repeated as they came to the stop at the corner. “And Master Aion wishes for you to stay healthy.”

At the mention of Aion, Joshua stopped his protests immediately-although he still pouted and every now and then eyed the brown paper bag in Fiore’s arm with a glare. The noise had quieted now to a whisper floating in and out of focus, mingled with the other thoughts in his head. It was still annoying, like a fly that kept buzzing near his ear, but at least now it was at a level that could easily be ignored. He stayed quiet for several minutes, imagining that the paved streets were dry, dusty land and the cars that drove by were cowboys on horses until he heard a bell ring. He turned his head and smiled softly as the bright red trolley came into view. They were finally going home.

As soon as they had boarded the trolley, Joshua rested his head onto Fiore’s shoulder. He could sense someone in the trolley remarking on the ‘strange couple’ in their head, but beyond sending a glare in the direction it came from he ignored it, and leaned up just a little so he could murmur Fiore’s name in her ear.
“Yes, sir?” she said.
“Since it got bad again…that means I’ll need a lim…?”
“Limiter? Yes. It probably does.”
“Odd word,” he said with a strange smile, snuggling closer to her side. “Sounds like ‘lemon’.”
Fiore seemed to decide to not comment on his observation, and instead asked “Where did you hear about that?”
“Aion said something about it to Shader during their last call.”
“You shouldn’t snoop.”
“I wasn’t! I was reading in the living room and could hear him.” He sighed. “I wonder how long it’ll be.”
“Until what?”
“Until she gets here.”
“Who?”
“Sis.”
Joshua thought he possibly felt a sense of unease from the girl next to him as she set a hand on top of his head. “I’m sure it will be soon. We can ask the Master about it when we get home, alright?”
“Alright.”
“Until then, please rest. I’ll wake you when we reach our stop.”
“Okay. Thanks.” He obediently closed his eyes, pushing aside the foreign thoughts in his head until he fell asleep and dreamed of angels and demons, of cowboys and people going about their day, of jewels and girls playing in front of a mansion, and about a girl standing in the snow and making a promise in front of a grave.
