Korean War!AU
The classroom was far emptier than usual, many of his friends and even some of the teachers had stayed home due to rumors that the conflict that was destroying the rest of the country would soon reach the village. It was hard to believe, he thought the same as his family, what would any of the multiple sides of the conflict have with such a small and rural village. The population was small, mostly the elderly, farmers, and their children. There was nothing of value, no advantage to be seen occupying the land, and the people were either too young or too old to be a threat.
Besides, the weather is too beautiful outside to be cooped up at home. Kirin thought as he looked out the window of his classroom, daydreaming since with the teacher gone there was little else to do but study. His reverie was abruptly cut short, and he looked up at the unfamiliar sound of something flying overhead. Before he could even piece together a thought of what the sound could be, he was knocked backwards off of his desk as the building he was in broke apart from a nearby explosion. Even though the structure wasn't directly hit, the shockwave from the blast was enough to shatter the walls of the old building.
When Kirin stood, he was surprised to find he was outside, he couldn't remember crawling out of the debris he was standing over and could only stand in disbelief at the amount of destruction surrounding him. It was all so sudden, so fast, and the smoke from distant and nearby fires were blocking out the clear sky. A group running to the shelters spotted him and waved him over, shouting at him that it was dangerous and he should go with them. It wasn't until he got closer that he recognized them as other students from the school, the dirt and varying injuries obscured anything familiar about them.
He wasn't even sure if he was hurt or not, and slowly walked after the group in a numb state of shock. The war was tearing its way through the village, laying waste to the countryside for no apparent reason.
What's the point in running, there isn't anywhere we can go.
