Lesson of the Day : It's Better to Repeat Things of Your Own Volition

How many times have I--? Please be advised that there have been a series of attacks in the area again. Be cautious, especially when traveling alone, and report any suspicious activity to the city watch.

To my knowledge, Abby and I haven't received a heart. The weapons seem normal, but if you have suspicions, they will be examined more thoroughly tomorrow.

I doubt this is related to the previous mutilations.

I'll look further into the whereabouts of the first heart then. Although, it's condition by now... Thank you... I'll always have suspicions regarding anything to do with Millenium.

It does seem to be taking a different tack from the previous ones.

Thank you. It's impossible to identify a person with only their heart, but we could learn how the organ was removed and the approximate age and cardiovascular health of the victim.

What is Millenium? I've heard the name mentioned several times.

At this point, any new information at all would be helpful.

Millenium is a criminal organization within the city. It hails from one of the past wars on a various Earth. They have access to a floating ship, missiles, and an army of ghouls to name a handful of things. Their leader has also just confessed to being part of a nearly week long citywide poisoning attempt that sickened and killed many people a few months past.

Noted.

Oh. That... oh.

Why hasn't the organization been stopped?

That is the question... Unfortunately it has boiled down to a lack of manpower when it comes up against said floating airship, missiles, and army of ghouls. Not to mention attention having to be divided between other killers, cases, and curses. Something we hope to rectify shortly. I hope.

I don't fully understand why the police force is so small when half of the people in this city have superpowers. With so many active threats, they should be motivated to--

Never mind. Idealism is a dead philosophy.

Many people take care of their own first and foremost and would tend to prefer to go around and help in their own way in groups and from their own homeworlds. The city watch -- or police force -- as you will, tends to be far more world spanning and a much greater timesink and source of responsibility.
It also... tends to take the brunt of attention when things don't go right. Higher expectations, I suppose.

. . . . but, I wouldn't say idealism is dead, per se.

That's unfair. A self-centered population doesn't warrant protection from an entity that it blames for its failure to plan and unite.

In some world, you might be right.

Well, we're all self-centered in a way... and still capable of selfless acts as well. Not everyone really has the proper mindset to join a organization like this. I wouldn't really think that I'm the type to be part of a city watch myself, but it seemed the best way for me to help. Others just have to find their own way for helping out. Although yes, dammit it sometimes is rather unfair.

It might have simply taken a different form in another world.

You have a generous concept of human nature... and maybe not enough selfishness.

I have my fair share of the latter... as to the former? We're probably pushing nearly half of the city who aren't technically human. I'd like to believe we're all capable of something greater.

Every individual is capable of something greater... although the Nietzschian ideal of individual perfection probably isn't what you believe in.

Ah... probably not, as I've never heard of this 'Nietzschian'. Something from your world then?

Yes. Nietzsche was a... controversial figure in philosophy.

Sorry. Philosophy's irrelevant here...

I secured three bottles of the beer "The Major" was giving away. Preliminary drinking tests don't show anything unusual about it. If it's harmless, I would guess that his other gifts are, too.

Mmm, perhaps we could talk about him another time then.

Ah, clever. That seems most likely at this point, but I'd still keep his gifts locked away in evidence on the off chance something might arise later.
