The main storyline tells us the story of how Batman and Superman met for the first time in the New 52 world. Also, some kind of demonic spirit transports them to Earth 2 where they meet their older counterparts and Wonder Woman.

The first storyline was a bit confusing at first with two Supermans and Batmans. But once I got the hang of it, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The Earth 2 heroes are quite a bit older, more experienced and they trust each other. Both are also married which comes as quite a surprise to our young heroes. Batman doesn’t trust anyone, not the Clark from his world or the two older heroes.

The main villain is new to me Kaiyo Chaos bringer who can apparently possess people and teleport at least two people at the same time from one dimension to another. She gets our heroes to fight each other at first, of course, and tries to sow mistrust among them as much as she can.

When Clark and Bruce meet at first they’re in their civilian identities in Gotham. Clark is very out of place in this dark city and Bruce actually resents Clark’s attitude of wanting to help people. Things go downhill from there. Oh and younger Clark can’t fly yet. He hops.

I very much enjoyed the older Earth-2 heroes. I’m going to see if I can get my hands on their comic.

It’s been years since I last saw Jae Lee’s work and then I thought I was too dark for me. In the first issue, his work is perhaps a bit too ornate for example for the first scenes which apparently happen in a generic park, but overall his work fit the story surprisingly well.

The final issue is Darkseid’s origin story. I’m not sure if we even needed this one. But it’s fine. We also get to see Kaiyo’s backstory.

And for anyone interested in writing comics, the collection ends with several pages of Pak’s script and Lee’s black and white art.

I liked it enough that I ordered the next one from the library.
