Had my first outing to St M's today. Forgot to send the Sunday School out - the one bit of the script that Guy forgot to give me. Doh!
Folk were thin on the ground but I'm not going to take it personally :D I followed the stage directions and we got through the whole thing without any major catastrophes.
I very much see the role of the service leader as that of guide - especially in that more traditional setting. We're on a journey through the service and it's my job to a) get them safely to the end and b) point out the scenery as we go. And I think I managed that. The hiccup with the Sunday School didn't faze me because Guy and I just hadn't discussed it, so it wasn't a case of me forgetting. I don't suppose the kids thought very well of me, though :p And I made a note of when they're supposed to leave, so it won't happen again - need to remember to send them off with a prayer, too.
I felt comfortable and assured and had nothing but good comments afterwards. For next time, I think I should probably speak a little more slowly and be nearer the mic.
It was nice to go back to the old service, too. The liturgy was never something I particularly objected to (though I understand why some people do), and there are some bits I really like - eg, 'awake oh sleeper and arise from the dead'. The confession and creed are words I can say without feeling I have to agree/disagree with every syllable. And I'm not there to pick apart their theology - I'm there to help them through the service.
So, nothing really that I wasn't expecting.
Ruth's talk on the Bishop's conference was interesting - and her link to St B's as having used the traditional parish system to produce something very untraditional was an interesting take.
Looking forward to 15 July :)
