I know a star!

Our local library recently had a sale on older magazines. I got six issues of a women's magazine for just 20 kronor. For you American readers that's approximately 3 bucks. (A few days later they were giving away those that hadn't sold and I got five more magazines for free!)

I now have a nice little pile of these magazines on the coffee table out on the front porch. Perfect for thumbing through out in the sunshine now that spring has finally arrived .

Which is what I was doing today when I started reading an article about how four women who moved to Sweden as adults from other countries view Sweden, Swedes, Swedish culture.

The first woman was from Afghanistan, and not surprisingly, she was impressed with the fact that the police are friendly and kind, and that men and woman truly experience equality in all ways.

I turned the page to meet the next person (hoping that one of the remaining three would be a love immigrant like myself).  One of you already KNOWS what I saw....

A half-page picture of my very own friend Liz (aka lizardek) and a page in the magazine with her views on Sweden. What a lovely lovely surprise! And what did Liz have to say about Sweden? That she thinks it's less stressful here (I agree), that the tradition of watching Donald Duck on Christmas is a little weird (I agree), that the habit of going around to every single person at a gathering to shake hands and exchange names is strange (I agree) and that the worst thing about Sweden is that it is too far away from family in the states. I agree.

Just think - I eat sushi on a regular basis with a bonafide magazine star!

(I tried to find a link online to the article in Taras January 2010 edition, but I'm afraid too much time has passed and it isn't to be found.)

life in sweden, friends
