Life Symbols - My mom

Aug 24, 2011 16:35

One of the first"> Life Symbols that comes to mind when I think of my mom is spoons.

One of my earliest childhood memories was of my mother with a pair of spoons. Someone was playing a piano (perhaps it was my grandfather), people were singing and my mom was playing the spoons.

She was awesome.

If you've never seen anyone live playing a pair of spoons you really have to check out this short little demo below (not my Mom, but the sight and sound of it is so much like her I can just about smell her perfume).

So, apart from the obvious fact that she actually plays the spoons, what would make a pair of them a fitting Life Symbol for my mother?

They're used to serve and my mother has what church people often call a "servant's heart". She gives wtihout restraint in every possible way. Try to serve up some delicious chicken soup with a fork - you lose the essence of it. But serve it up with a spoon and you get every drop. That's my mom - good homemade chicken soup served with a BIG SPOON.

When you were sick as a child, did your mother load up a spoonful of something to make you feel better and then deliver that medicine-in-a-spoon directly from her hand to your mouth? You could just as easily give a kid medicine in some other way, but something about that hand-delivered spoonful of caring adds to the effectiveness of the medicine.

Knives are sharp, forks are pokey, spoons are beautifully formed into safe, reliable, versatile instruments.

Now watch the video (it's under a minute). Close your eyes and imagine that your very own mom is entertaining a roomful of people making that fascinating sound with her own two hands and some simple spoons from somebody's kitchen. Isn't she just the best mom ever?
