She said (at the beginning of a conference call with five other colleagues):
"Hey Geena! You have diabetes, right? Did you see the article the other day in Dagens Nyheter (a Swedish daily newspaper) about how people with diabetes can be cured if they just eat better and lose some weight? Do you want me to send you a link?"
I said:
"No, I didn't see that. About a zillion people who have this disease would be delighted if it were so simple! I know that when I first was diagnosed I was able to put off needing medications by exercising and changing my diet, but it is, after all, a progressive disease. Thanks for thinking of me, though."
What I wanted to say:
"Really. Cured? Just like that? And just think, Dagens Nyheter has the scoop on news that will rock the planet. Please do keep on talking about how I need to lose weight and probably eat like an idiot EVERY time we have a conference call. Because it's so relevant you know."
