Years ago I read someone's idea that the things that change your life happen more often in the middle of an ordinary Tuesday than on big-planned-event-days. It resonated with me then, just weeks after the otherwise ordinary Tuesday when I found out that my then-husband was having an affair with a woman in his office. (An event which ended up giving me the chance to start a new and amazingly wonderful life - THANKS, Lady!)
When I worked at a mental health center in Florida I had a good friend / coworker with whom I had a standing Tuesday lunch date. I loved those lunches. We always went to the same place (a Morrison's buffet-style restaurant where you could get a vegetable plate with your choice of four veggies and a big glass of iced tea for a tiny little sum of money. We usually sat at a table by the window where we could easily see everyone around us. If none of our fellow coworkers were around we had a delicious bit of gossip and, when needed, a good bitch-session about our bosses and other co-workers.
One of our lunches happened on one of those above-mentioned Tuesdays which became unexpectedly extraordinary: September 11, 2001. I remember that one of us called the other and asked if we should still have our regular lunch. The answer from us both was "YES - today of all days we need to keep this routine". There was no gossip that day. It was a Tuesday lunch during which two good friends sat together in complete shock over the sudden change in the climate of our lives.
These days I work from home and eat my lunch most often at my desk. Occasionally I have an actual free hour in the middle of the day and have lunch with Björn on the bigass red sofa.
Nowadays I go out to lunch about once a month with my pal
lizardek . I pick her up at her office and we drive to a sushi place about 10 minutes away where we get pretty much the same sushi rolls every time. We catch up on stuff in our lives and we fill in the gaps that were left hanging since our last lunch and we tell each other the rest of the stories behind some of our recent journal posts. I love these Tuesday lunches with Liz. I only wish we could do them every single Tuesday.
I think everyone should have a Tuesday lunch pal.
