Björn and his brother have had the most unpleasant task of notifying various companies and agencies of the death of their father. Some of the time it has been unbelievably and ridiculously difficult. It's hard enough to lose someone you love - services agencies that make it even harder are one of the banes of modern life.
But Telenor absolutely takes the cake.
Björn called them to cancel his father's mobile telephone service. The customer service representative asked the reason for the cancellation and of course was told that the person with the service had died. Presumably that customer service rep entered that information into a computer database, which should have triggered some kind of confirmation letter to Björn.
It did, sort of. Here is a translation of part of the letter the folks at Telenor sent to Björn's dad (yes, they sent the letter to a man they knew had passed away):
We have accepted your cancellation as of the 7th of August in the matter of the above-named contract.
We think that it's very unfortunate that you have chosen to leave us and we naturally hope to soon see you again as our customer. You are always welcome back!
If you have any questions or viewpoints you are always welcome to contact us at Customer Service. We are open around the clock. Ring when it suits you best!
I have to say that Kjell was the kind of man who would have laughed his ass off at this letter. And he was the kind of man who, if it is at all possible, will certainly contact Telenor at Customer Service, with as much scary from-the-great-beyond spookiness as he can muster up.
