I did the good Swedish thing this morning and carried a tray with hot chocolate, little sandwiches and a couple of small presents in to Björn to awaken him with the traditional Swedish birthday song "Ja må han leva".
[The translation of that song gives me a little pause: Yes, may he live. Yes may he live. Yes may he live out one hundred years. Of course he will live. Of course he will live. Of course he will live out one hundred years.]
Björn got to do absolutely everything he wanted to do on his birthday. Apparently he wanted to put together a new freestanding closet, go to the hardware store for a better screwdriver, fetch more wood for the fireplace, cook a delicious dinner and have a little bit of cosy radio-listening time.
His dad, on the other hand, turns 75 next week - one of the birthdays Swedes pay particular attention to. Asked what he wanted for his birthday came this answer: Thanksgiving. So next Saturday it'll be a big birthday bash at Kjell's house complete with turkey, mashed potatoes, yams, cornbread dressing, green bean casserole and a big ol' American style birthday cake.
I do so love my Swedish men.
