Had a few fun moments over this past week:
On a recommendation from our SCA/martial arts friend, we parked Bobby at the baby-sitters and went up to Berkley to see the ULTIMATE fabric store. It was way not cheap, but the neat thing was that they HAD all this great stuff available. Hundreds of gorgeous Asian fabrics, interesting organic cottons and bamboo cloth (not period, obviously, but the organic dyes create an appropriate color palate), linen in all varieties, moderate weight wool coating in lovely colors, a whole range of wool gaberdine colors, silk in all varieties, and so on and so on.... Plus things I never even guessed existed, like wool gauze. Our friend did tell us that we needed to set a budget before we went, and he was right. We restrained ourselves, and I only bought some on sale light blue wool for sleeves, and some silk-cotton for my eventual huik. (I got some light black wool but it's too heavy to hang off my head. Plus I finally read that article on low grade silks in period, which makes me think that it might be a viable choice for a moderately well off house wife. Of course, theirs were silk over linen, but this is as close as I could get.) Then on the way home we ate lovely Mediterranean food. Yum, yum.
Then another day we took our baby-sitter up on her gratis dinner and a movie offer (in celebration of the new baby) and found a new Thai place (good AND cheap, a rarity here). Then we went to see Clash of the Titans, which I enjoyed more than I thought I would. I know it got lousy reviews, but I thought it was fun. I think I saw the 1981 version a half dozen times in my Greek Myth obsession phase. The only thing I didn't really like was the 3-D. I'm not really sure it added much to the experience, added to the price, and gave me a headache.
Now David's Mom is visiting us, mostly to see the grandchild. We've had a lot of fun so far, shopping, cooking, running around in parks, etc. Mom's husband Joe sent her with a very nice monetary gift for us all to go out dinner for belated Easter. So we all pow-wowed and agreed to turn said money in to a grill. The shrimp kabobs were as good as anything in a restaurant (we all agreed). And Mom brought Bobby all sorts of toys. The two of them have spent a long time digging in the dirt with the new rake and shovel. Also, Mom insisted on buying me some new maternity clothes. (I don't look pregnant at all yet, but I'm just now at the point where all my pants are starting to bug me.) Luckily, this time around maternity clothes are much cooler and I found a few things that will carry me through my whole pregnancy, but don't even look like maternity clothes now. Yea.
Tonight we continued the belated Easter theme, and dyed Easter eggs. Bobby was so excited, and cried when it was over. "No, no, my egg, MYYYYYYY egg!" Bobby is generally pretty well behaved, but he's pushing all the boundaries now that he has Grandma here to show off for. Yesterday he was in time out three times in less than an hour. Sigh. On the plus side, he LOVES his Grandma (he calls her "Paw-Paw", don't ask me why) and has a great time leading her around and telling her what to do. Tomorrow David goes back to work, and Mom and Bobby and I have plans to spend the day on the town. Hopefully it'll stop raining. (It doesn't rain very often out here, but when it does people drive like idiots and we all act like nature has betrayed us somehow.)
