Hmm... I can't help thinking that maybe Steve Jobs has an over-inflated sense of his own importance, and enough money to pander to it. He only makes computers after all. And thinking about it, excluding people I only know on LJ, I know 2 people with Macs; one is a woman in her seventies who got it on the recommendation of her son, and is annoyed because no-one else knows how to fix things when they go wrong; the other recently decided he couldn't afford another Mac, bought a laptop, put openSUSE Linux on it, and is as happy as can be. But then, I'm not impressed by Nike or Cadbury-Schweppes either!
Of course Jobs is an egomaniac. He's also ridiculously charismatic, apparently. As to how important he is - If people generally seem to think you're important, isn't that the metric?
Mac use tends to run deep in kind of narrow channels - Mostly academia and art-related fields.
I'm kind of surprised to hear the company is as big as Nike, honestly.
