Thought of the day

What makes a river so restful to people is that it doesn't have any doubt, it is sure to get where it is going, and it doesn't want to go anywhere else.
-Hal Boyle, "Help, Help! Another Day!", 1970

As time goes on, I find that I feel more like a river in these ways and it is doing wonders for putting the rest of my life in order. When those bigger questions are answered (in the short term with a longer term perspective) the day-to-day is still hard but at least you know what it is that you're doing it all for and that it is worth the effort. I'm even trying harder to overlook the things I lack/wish for (the "it doesn't want to go anywhere else" part) in a few aspects of my life that are the hardest for me to accept. That's been a good thing too.

I'm hard at work on my presentation for the ASC conference in Philly this week. I'll be there Wednesday-Saturday for those that want to get together--drop me a line. I present Saturday morning on the fascinating topic of "True Threat or Moral Panic: Media Representations of the 'Mentally Ill School Shooter' and Their Impact". I'll also be meeting with a professor at Rutgers who wants to work on a paper with me about child welfare--> juvenile justice. Plus his dataset would be ideal for a dissertation (yes, I know I already have another dissertation lined up that I should do, but this would have still been my #1 choice if I could make it happen).

Hope everybody had a good Halloween! I bought a cute witch accessory kit to wear with this corset/leather skirt outfit I have and then was too busy to get to go out anywhere. Oh well, always next year. :-)
