Almost done corrections on another chapter. That, of course, means that I'm taking a break. I couldn't pass this one up:

Lawrence of Arabia
T.E. Lawrence declined invitations to film his writings as early as 1926, when
Rex Ingram suggested the idea. Later,
Alexander Korda tried to launch a version starring
Leslie Howard.
[J. falls off her chair and melts]
Immortal Beloved
Bernard Rose removed the music from the Columbia and Focus opening segments; he thought they sounded "cheesy" compared to Beethoven.
[J: He sounds like a real asshole through a lot of the Director's Commentary]
The Lion in Winter
Katharine Hepburn affectionately referred to 'Peter O'Toole (I)' as "pig" during filming. Every day at five o'clock the two would unwind over a cigarette and a glass of white wine.
Dazed and Confused
All the wooden paddles were custom designed by the stars themselves. Check for one that says "17 yrs", noticing the year difference between the movie and the plot setting.
The Empire Strikes Back
In the DVD commentary,
Carrie Fisher relates that during some of the London filming, she stayed a house rented from
Eric Idle. Idle and the Pythons were filming
Life of Brian (1979) at the time. One evening, Idle had a small party, including
Harrison Ford and
The Rolling Stones, and served a potent liquor (which the Pythons had been distributing to extras on their film, to help boost morale) that he referred to as "Tunisian Table Cleaner". They stayed up most of the night drinking and having fun. The first scenes shot the next day were the arrival at Cloud City, which she says helps explain why she and Ford were so happy in those scenes. Idle is said to be pleased that he had a small hand in how the finished film turned out.
[J: It's true! They're all smiling and for no reason! Bwa ha ha ha]
The Petrified Forest
Leslie Howard and
Humphrey Bogart had played the same roles in the stage version. Warner Brothers wanted to put Howard in the film but replace Bogart with
Edward G. Robinson. Howard insisted on Bogart, and Robinson was happy to step aside from yet another gangster role. Bogart would later name his first child with
Lauren Bacall Leslie, in honor of Howard, the man who gave him his first big break.
[J: Actually, it was their *second* child -- their first child was named "Steve" after Bogie's role in To Have and Have Not]
Random Harvest
Ronald Colman had first hand experience of shell shock - he had been in the WW1 Battle of Ypres.
Last of the Mohicans
Many long nights were spent filming the siege scenes. Due to the expansive area involved, loudspeakers were installed around the battlefield and fort so directions could be easily given to the hundreds of cast and crew. One night after many long hours, Mann was heard to shout over the speakers, "What's that orange light? Turn out that orange light!" After a pause another voice came over the speakers stating, "That's the SUN, Michael."
What's New, Pussycat?
Richard Burton appears in a cameo with 'Peter O'Toole (I)' in a scene in a bar where Buton asks O'Toole "Don't you know me from someplace?" and O'Toole responds "Give my regards to what's her name." The dialogue is a reference to their appearance together in
Becket (1964) and to Burton's wife at the time,
Elizabeth Taylor. Screenwriter Woody Allen later said of the Burton cameo, "It was so cute, you want to vomit."
[J: Shut up, Woody.]
The Big Lebowski
The Dude never actually bowls.
