So, last night was Sundowner(aka Chris McCaughn of The Lawrence arms + backing band), Chuck Ragan and Matt Skiba @ the metro in chicago. Now, see....Alkaline Trio is my favorite band. So I had super expectations going into this show because everytime I see skiba or Dan or Alk3, I have enormous expectations.

Sundowner played first. Now this is a bold statement but they put on the best show for the evening.  The Lawrence Arms are my second favorite band and Chris just fucking kicked ass. He was joined on stage by Eli from the smoking popes, Jenny Choi from sanawon and Neil the drummer of The Lawrence arms.  They played very well together and Chris sounded amazing. The highlight of course for me was My Boatless Booze Cruise, because this is a great larry arms song and an even better acoustic song. Brendan Kelly originally wrote this song and sings it in The Lawrence Arms but Chris re-did it I guess you could say and it is amazing.

Next up was Chuck Ragan.  Now I have a soft spot in my heart for Chuck. Hot Water Music in my opinion put on one of the best live shows Ive ever seen and Ive seen some pretty rockin live shows. There is so much energy and emotion at a HWM show and Chuck did not dissapoint. His acoustic music is Wonderful. It could be described as a cross between punk/rock/country  with a HUGE Bob Dylan influence. He played many of his solo songs, which I was not familiar with but were awesome. He just has sooooooooooo much energy and emotion on stage. His eyes closed, sweating profousely  (sp) and screaming on the top of his lungs. It was a great enjoyment.

About 10 songs into Chucks set Matt joined him on stage for a song.  I wasnt familiar with the song, they played it together and then Chuck left and it was time for the nights headliner.

Ok, so ive seen alkaline trio a million times. And skiba tonight dissapointed me. But I wanted to hear alk3 songs not his solo stuff, which I dont think is as good as the music he writes in alkaline trio. I wanted to hear alk3 songs stripped down acoustic. He played a fair share of his solo material and some alkaline trio songs.  about 3/4 of the way through his set, the crowd was in for a treat. If you didnt know this was coming then youre an idiot, but obviously Chuck joined him on stage and they played about 5-6 songs togehter.

It was beautiful. You could tell the two of them are close friends and have been for a while.  Alk3 and Hot Water Music have toured together countless times and even put out a split ep togehter(which is amazing).  They played Hot Water musics God Deciding and Rooftops and they played Alk3's Bleeder, which chuck covered on the split and is known for playing it live.  The best part, the biggest treat this crowd got was Skiba and Chuck covering Bob Dylan's "its all over now, baby blue." Now Im a big Dylan fan and seeing two of my fav. guitar/singer's cover him was Awesome. That made the entire night.

I was a little dissapointed in skibas choice in songs but he didnt dissapoint.  I saw that brendan kelly was there in the "vip" area of the balcony thus having the entire lawrence arms in attendance and Im sure derek and Dan were there too but were incognito.

The show was full of douches, mainly younger kids who are in love with skiba. All in all I give the show a 3 out of 5 stars.

The only downfall was that the beers were 5 a piece for a lite draft and they didnt even play radio, which would have been nice.
The nicest part was Chuck dedicated two songs to "the guys in the draft" and "Chris, George and Jason"

After the show me and my girlfriend enjoyed a gourment meal at taco bell and then rode the wonderful red line home and went to sleep.

Im on my third vodka drink, waiting for her to get home or for someone to call me with some good news about a fun eventful evening.

Im really looking forward to Rage Against the Machine on the 24th
and The Larence Arms, The Falcon, American Steel and Sundowner oct 11. @ the metro. Thats going to be a fucking blast.

oh yea...there would have been pictures but they baned digis. My gf had hers but wouldnt let me use it in fear of getting it taken away. I would have used mine but I broke it last weekend being wasted and droping it.
