Major Crimes

OK, when I started writing this I wrote The Closer instead of Major Crimes. It’s been weird watching so many familiar characters working on the same sets trying to remember that it’s a different show.

[Possible Spoilers] When Major Crimes first premiered, I really didn’t like the kid, Rusty. I was kinda hoping that his character arc would only last an episode or two, that he wouldn’t be a regular character. But as the season has gone on, it’s looking more and more like he’s here to stay. But he’s been growing on me, which I didn’t quite expect.

This kid is so broken. Beaten by his mother’s boyfriend, when he stood up for himself, his mother abandoned him (choosing the boyfriend over her own son). When we first met Rusty in the series finale of The Closer, he was turning tricks to support himself, and witnessed a crime. Which is why I was hoping that his “protected witness” status wouldn’t last long. But it has, and now he’s living with Sharon and has basically been “adopted” by the Major Crimes squad.

In last week’s episode (Cheaters Never Propose) we saw how close Sharon and Rusty have become. Rusty was on his way to visit with his sperm donor (I can’t quite bring myself to call that jerk his “father”…) and before he left, Sharon gave him a hug. I think it’s the first time we’ve seen her touch him. And it was a long hug. That he returned. Then he texted her from his father’s house and said that he missed her. (I actually thought that was suspicious, that it might have been the father texting, because it seemed so out of character for Rusty to be nice to Sharon…) When he came back, he’d been beaten. The B story in tonight’s episode (Long Shot) was all about Sharon setting up his sperm donor to give up parental rights. And he did sign the paperwork before the end of the episode (although I'll admit the scene felt a little to close to blackmail for my taste). The thing is, I feel like there’s more to the story. Last week Rusty said, before going off to visit the sperm donor’s house, that he could tell when people want something from him, and that SD wanted something. I wish we’d found out what that something was, because this guy was definitely shifty.

At any rate, it was a good season. I hate that I have to wait until next summer for new episodes. That's a long time to wait. =(
