Weekend Update

Jun 11, 2012 22:24

I feel like all I did all weekend was run errands. I did a bunch of driving around on Saturday, and was unfortunately on the wrong end of the state, so I missed Alysa’s graduation party.

I unwound by watching S.W.A.T. on Netflix when I got home. The movie stars a very young looking Colin Farrell (he’s 27), Jeremy Renner, Michelle Rodriguez, Oliver Martinez (who was the smoking hot lover in Unfaithful) and Samuel L. Jackson. In one of the early scenes, this cop walks up to talk to them and I had to do a double take because he looked so familiar. Turns it it was Josh Charles, who plays Will Gardner on The Good Wife, sporting a much lighter hair color than I’m used to seeing on him.

I watched the movie because I was curious to see Jeremy Renner in something else besides the Avengers and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. He’s still a law enforcement character in this one, one of the S.W.A.T. guys, but there are some surprises in the role. Like, getting to see him wearing both combat fatigues and several earrings in his ears. At any rate, he’s yummy no matter what he’s wearing.

Sunday I headed down to IKEA where I met up with willowbard for some shopping and Swedish meatballs. I hadn’t seen her since she moved back East, so it was good to catch up on all the stuff that doesn’t make it onto Live Journal or Facebook. I LOVE IKEA. But then again, as the child of an engineer, I admire good design. Plus, I always enjoy browsing around the store, especially the kids department. We were walking around when we saw this father and daughter, and the father was holding some kind of green stuffed toy. I looked at it and was like, “Is that broccoli?!?”

[Yes, yes it was]

My mission for the day was to buy a desk, because I spent all day on my arse, I want to experiment with a standing desk. I figured if I could find a cheap desk, I could IKEA Hack it into a standing desk by putting it up on lifts. I waffled around about some of the larger desks, because I really didn’t want to spend a whole lotta money. I ended up picking up a small computer desk/side table for $20. That way, if I decide I hate standing and typing, I’m not out a whole lotta money.

They had some safety gear on sale too, so I picked up a first aid kit for the car. And two reflective vests, one for the car and one for at home. The vests were cheap enough that I was sorely tempted to buy a case of them. I could fling them out the car window at all the stupid teenagers in town who wear solid black and walk down the road after dark scaring the crap out of me because I can’t see them until I’m on top of them. /curmudgeon

And the other thing I bought was some artwork for the big blank space over my bed. They had a big print of a piece of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel, you know the bit, where God reaches across to Adam and says, “Pull my finger.”

After I got home I ran my tent over to Stephen and Alena’s and dropped off Alysa's present. They had the school show today, but since I’m so damn behind at work I didn’t go. When Alena first asked if they could borrow it, I actually had no idea where the damn thing was. I’d looked for it a couple of times lately, but I was looking for a big pile of canvas. I’d completely forgotten that I’d stuffed it into a plastic tub. So it was hiding in plain sight, with all my other tubs of reenactment gear stuffed under the two tables in the sewing room. D’oh!

Sunday night I caught The Last Samurai on cable. I can always tell when Tom Cruise is attempting to get another Oscar nod. The problem is, his costars keep getting the nominations (Cuba Gooding Jr., Jamie Foxx, Robert Downey Jr., Ken Watanabe) instead of him. It must just kill him. But then again, he doesn’t show the Academy the respect they deserve. For years he’s been showing up at the Oscars to present with scruff on his face. When you consider the fact that he’s almost always clean shaven, you have to think it’s a big “Fuck You” to the Academy that he refuses to shave on their big night. And the Academy seems to be retaliating by not nominating him for the award he so obviously craves. (Yes, I know he's had three nominations, but he hasn't won yet and Nicole Kidman has an Oscar, and you know that's just KILLING him.) Well, at least that’s my little conspiracy theory. At any rate, I love this movie, for everything EXCEPT Tom Cruise. All the Japanese actors are magnificent. It’s such a lovely movie. Too bad Tom has to be in it.

Sunday I also watched an episode of The Unusuals, which is this totally quirky “comedy-drama” cop show that was on ABC for one season. And starred Jeremy Renner. OK, let’s just make it official and welcome Jeremy Renner to my stable of imaginary boyfriends. There’s plenty of room in the bunkhouse, go make yourself comfortable dude. The show is weird, but I watched the second episode tonight, and I might end up watching all nine episodes that are available on NetFlix.
