The Unusuals

Sunday morning fionaniconnor came over and I made waffles! And we sat on the couch and I sewed and she knitted and we watched The Unusuals on DVD. It’s a quirky little TV show that lasted one season back in 2009 that is mostly memorable for starring Jeremy Renner (and having some of my favorite bedroom scenes for him).

It’s a really weird little show. IMDB describes it as “Darkly comedic drama focusing on the dysfunctional cops and staff of an infamous NYPD precinct.” But Wikipedia is more accurate when they say, “An ABC press release described The Unusuals as "like a modern-day M*A*S*H" that "explores both the grounded drama and comic insanity of the world of New York City police detectives, where every cop has a secret".”

Because the first time I watched this show, it made zero sense until I read that bit about it really being M*A*S*H. And then all the crazy made a weird sort of sense. Renner plays the Hawkeye character, funny, quirky, and a bit world-weary. There’s a crazy cop character that is basically Klinger, and a stick-up-his-arse by the rules cop who is pretty much Frank Burnes. And their Captain has a very similar “Why am I stuck with these crazy idiots” sense that Colonel Potter had on the show. And there’s a dispatcher who does comedy voice-overs that kinda remind me of when Radar would get on the PA and make announcements. It’s really only M*A*S*H if you squint, but hey, I’ve got bad eyesight and I squint a lot.

We watched the first three episodes, which includes my favorite hilarious scene where Detective Walsh and his girlfriend come tumbling out of large metal storage cabinet where they’d been having sex. And we get to see Mr. Renner in his boxer-briefs. *fans self* Let’s just say, he was a hottie even before he got a personal trainer for The Avengers…

The show also stars Harold Perrineau and Adam Goldberg, who are a couple of character actors that show up all over the place, so their faces look really familiar. Monique Gabriela Curnen (Walsh’s detective girlfriend) has also been in The Dark Night, on Lie to Me, and had a bunch of guest starring roles. Basically the entire cast has been all over TV as guest stars.

One of the fun things about watching old TV shows for me is seeing how many (now) famous faces show up in guest starring roles.

Casey’s father is Chris Sarandon (Prince Humperdink from the Princess Bride)

Her financial planner/boyfriend is Ian Kahn (General George Washington on Turn)

In episode 3 Tate Ellington (Simon Asher on Quantico) is a guy who got arrested for peeing on a cop’s shoes when he was drunk

In episode 5 Kerri Washington (Olivia Pope on Scandal) has a tiny bit part (like one line) as a translator. I had to rewind to make sure it was her.

And then there’s one of my all-time favorite lines from a leading man EVER:

Shraeger: (about Beaumont) I thought you weren't her boyfriend.
Walsh: I'm not. Twelve-year-olds have boyfriends. I'm her man.

Just dropping a couple of video clips here for posterity.

Of course, I watched the rest of the 10 episode season once she went home. Just as much fun the second time around. I really wish this show had gotten a chance, because it's hilarious and weird and I loved it.
