eBook Tree

And over on Tumblr comes the news that the problem AO3 had recently with what they thought was a denial of service attack that threatened to overload their servers and forced them to temporarily suspend creating new accounts? Was probably a bot attack from free e-book site eBooks Tree, which seems to have scraped the site to create "free" eBooks of everyone's fan fiction (or as much as they could scrape before AO3 shut itself down). I was able to download two of my own stories for free, but others on Tumblr have reported being asked to create a user account and supply their credit card information in order to view what they think are their own stories.

So, stealing stories from a free site, creating PDFs and e-books from them and then charging people to read the content? Yeah, no bueno. I've already sent them a DMCA takedown notice, because I have not authorized them to publish my works on their site.

The real tip off that they're a pirate site? Is all the actual books being shared on the site. Including advance reader copies, sample chapters, and books that are still in print and UNDER COPYRIGHT.

Grrrrrr.
