Today, when I have an impromptu Guild event at Wulfram’s college in CT, I am thankful for the Guild. Five and a half years ago, in May 2009, five of us met in Stephen’s living room to talk about the possibility of founding a reenactment group. And somehow, five months later, we debuted Das Geld Fahnlein at the Connecticut Renaissance Faire with 15 members on the roster. Over the years, we’ve held steady at around 12 - 14 active members, which is pretty surprising for a reenactment group of our caliber.
I’ve always been interested in History. I like that the Guild gives me a time and a place to direct my focus. I like that we’re pretty hard core, because it’s going to keep me from getting bored or just skating by on what I already know.
And most of all, I love the people. I’m so VERY thankful that I fell in with a bunch of sane grown ups with a wicked sense of humor. I can’t count the number of times I’ve laughed until my stomach hurt with this group. I blame Stephen for that. He’s one of the most amazing people I know, both a completely competent leader and grown up, and at the same time a delightfully nerdy geek who is into gaming and costuming and comic books and other great stuff. I’ve often joked that the Guild is actually the Cult of Stephen’s Friends, but in a way, I’m glad for it. Because he’s drawn together a bunch of people who all are willing to work together, with minimal drama, to get something done and have a good time doing it.
I am a better person for having this hobby and hanging out with this group of people.
