Those are not the Landsknecht I am looking for...

Last year at the event at Plymouth College Medieval and Renaissance Forum I met the Baron of Stonemarche (AKA the SCA name for New Hampshire). We had a lovely long chat and he told me how much he wanted to do some Landsknecht garb. I can't recall, I may have even sent him the visual costume reference that I made up a year or so back. He was so excited about it that I thought we might even have a chance of recruiting him for the Guild once he stepped down as Baron this year.

Today I've been seeing photos over on Facebook from Birka. And it turns out he DID finally get some red, white, and blue Landsknecht garb made up for himself. Except it was as a joke. It was one of those "I have a theme for this event" things that they occasionally do in the SCA (and call me weird, but I can't see putting so much time and effort into an outfit that I only plan to wear once. At least in fannish costuming, the folks who are serious about it compete the same costume at several cons in a season, working their way up through regional cons to one of the big ones like a WorldCon). The theme for the event? Your favorite sports team. *eyeroll* The woman (who is on my FB friends list) who made the baroness' costume? Posted a photo of a Patriot's cheerleader and said "this was the inspiration photo" for the slash and puff gown she made. The baron actually had the Patriot's swoosh on the side of the linen coif he was wearing under his crown.

Ugh. Is it wrong of me to feel upset? I mean, I almost feel like you're making fun of something that's important to me when you mix modern and medieval like that. It's the same feeling I have when I see fighters with Shrek or Captain America as their "heraldry" on their shields.

Just one of the reasons why I can't bring myself to join the SCA. Every time I start thinking I will, some other stupid thing comes up and reminds me why, after thinking about it for literally decades I have not yet brought myself to join this organization.
