Last Thursday morning I slept a little bit late. But when I got out of bed, I still had time to squeeze in my workout, so I did. But when I finished my walk, and went to plug in my FitBit to download my steps, I discovered that for the first time, I’d forgotten to clip it on my belt before I started walking. BUGGER.
And then a really silly thing happened. And it tells you a lot about the sorts of shenanigans that go on inside my head on a regular basis and how my inner critic works really hard at making me miserable. I got really mad at myself and started a whole round of self-criticism. I felt like a total failure, because now all my little graphs and charts about my workouts were going to be off.
But then something rather wonderful happened. I was able to step back and stop listening to my inner critic. I had worked out. The only thing I’d failed to do was record my workout on my FitBit. That doesn’t negate the fact that I moved my body for a half hour that morning. Or mean that I didn’t burn some calories and get my blood moving first thing. It doesn’t make me a failure at life. It just means that I didn’t record my workout. Not that the workout didn’t happen.
Somedays I can step back and look at myself, and I’m always amazed at how easily I can let One Little Thing get me down. I know that there are days when I’m my own worst enemy. But it’s hard to cut myself off at the pass when I’m so damn GOOD at putting myself down. I’ve had years of practice. *wry grin*
I’ve been doing a whole lotta reading and thinking the past couple of weeks about depression and mental paradigms and negative thoughts vs. thinking positive and growing as a person. There are a lot of thinky thoughts running around in my head right now that are starting to feel like they might generate some posts. Maybe a LOT of posts. So gird your loins. You’ve been warned.
Hey, it’s February. I get introspective this time of year. =P
depression,
my inner critic,
moody blues,
stuff i think about,
negative spiral of doom,
