The animals were all so cute. Well, especially the sea mammals and penguins. And the rays. And the seahorses. And the turtles. I wanted to swim with them all. We'd play and stuff. There's just that bit about the water being cooler than I'd probably be able to withstand for more than 10 seconds.
The seals were so playful. They knew what we wanted. I couldn't help but talk to them. (Actually, I talked to many of the animals.)
I wanted to take them all home with me. Alas, not remotely feasible, but still a lofty goal.
I understand what you're saying about animals in captivity. And captivity provides some programs necessary for the survival of certain species, such as the panda, which is horrifyingly close to extinction. This week, we've had 5 newborn pandas due to captivity programs.
Zoos and aquariums allow for humans to interact and connect with animals, thereby getting the message across that they're real. It's become less an issue for me, when I see animals treated well, with proper space and habitat requirements. But, on Saturday, we walked through the mall here and some farm or group was putting on a rabbit exhibit and the animals were in such tiny cages that they couldn't turn around even. I couldn't even look at them. It made me so sad.
You would be proud. The morning after our shark talk, I looked up the wikipedia entry on sharks. Though, I tried to not look at the pictures. Cause, ewwwww. Anyway, that one shark still sounds terrifying and I hope never to have to be at sea or anything like that. And I was right about the bull shark being in Nicaragua, but not in Lake Managua, but rather Lake Nicaragua. Scary. Lake Managua is too polluted - due in part to Kodak dumping mercury in the lake - for the sharks to survive.
Those sharks look less cute and more interesting to me. I don't know if I'd want to cuddle it or take it home with me, but I'd certainly like to observe it. Give me a good ray instead.
Also, I'm thinking of using Inara's bathing method - illustrated in the above icon - for the foreseeable future. *g*
I only go to zoos that treat their animals well. The Central Park zoo is awful, which is why we didn't go this time.
I am proud! Good stuff! I think learning about sharks helps people to see that they can be beautiful and that they're important for our eco system. Some are just flat out scary, but for the most part they are misunderstood.
I see the icon below, and agree with the bathing method ;)
I know! They seem to be there waiting for you to talk to them. I swear the seal came out right after I talked to it in French, when it wouldn't when I talked to it in English.
That's a good policy. I wonder what the Edmonton Zoo is like. I hope it's okay. I'm still horrified by the rabbits I saw.
It makes me sad when zoos treat their animals badly. I wish they'd understand the concept of stewardship, which is something falena84 and I discussed a lot while in Florence.
I also wish circuses would stop using animals. And clowns. But that's a whole other issue.
Sharks are misunderstood. I appreciate that now. But they still scare me. I will work on my fear, though. And I certainly don't think we should partake in wholesale killing of the animal, just because I fear it. I just don't want to stand in waters where it might live.
Well, I lied. I'm going to take a bath momentarily and read and hopefully relax a bit.
I've heard some bad things about the Calgary zoo, but I don't know if that's the same as the Edmonton one (I'm ignorant ;) ).
Those rabbits would have made me sad, too. I wish circuses would stop using animals as well. There is no need. Cirque de Soleil doesn't need them.
It's more than ok to be scared, there are lots of animals that scare me. Like spiders, and most bugs. But I know that they are beautiful in their own way, and I wouldn't want to hurt them. And *I* wouldn't go in the water with sharks! Maybe in a cage....but probably not ;)
