I'm trying to figure out when the Ramadan starts. I looked online and one site indicates that it's October 5th. The other night, spike told me that it starts October 4th. Last night, the child said that she asked her dad's friend and he said October 6th. Doing a more extensive search online has not brought any kind of consensus either.
The child is not sure if she wants to fast this year or not. She tried last year, but she didn't manage to hold out for very long. Given that her dad hasn't been very active in promoting or teaching the faith that he grew up with, it's not terribly surprising. And now that she's changed schools to one that is decidedly less populated with Muslims, she may not feel the same kind of support and/or pressure to keep up appearances.
However, the child sees herself as Arab and Muslim. That's kind of how she defines herself. At least, that's how she defines herself to her paternal grandmother, who was less than pleased with the lack of Muslim upbringing the child had received at the hands of her father, who, by the way, eats pork and enjoys alcohol. I consider myself blameless in this, because it's not like I'm Muslim.
Which doesn't mean that I'm not going to fast. If the child decides she wants to fast, I'm going to support her in that decision. Yes, by fasting myself. It's not like I haven't considered it before. I've just never followed through. I just don't anticipate that it's going to be easy. Plus, there are things I will indulge in. Like brushing my teeth after dawn. I hope that's not a serious no-no. It's not like I'll be swallowing anything. Cause, ewww.
Now, I want to make fattouche. Or, as my Lebanese friends used to call it, "salade de Ramadan."
One last thing - Eid al Adha or Festival of Sacrifice, is this what we call "Fête des moutons" in France?
Yeah, one day, I'll actually be able to tell all the "Eids" apart and use the correct terminology. For now, though, I'm sticking with my French Muslim vocabulary. It's what I know.
I have a plan for today. I'm going to go out soon and pick up the Veronica Mars soundtrack, which was released today. I'm going to watch a few of the VM eps that I've watched the least - eps 8, 9, 11, 13 and 14. I'm also going to go through the careers and classifieds sections of Saturday's paper for job possibilities. And at 7 pm tonight, the 24-hour countdown begins. Tomorrow is the season premiere of Veronica Mars. Squee!
