I'm appreciating it rather a lot that the Globe & Mail
review of New Moon says of Kristen Stewart: "coolly intense, androgynous and intelligent - remains the series’s strongest asset."
I wasn't a fan when I saw the first film but knee-jerk distaste for fangirl hateration - coupled with Dan Levy
calling her a bitch and saying she was "replaceable" - made me sympathetic to her situation. Whenever a woman is trash talked in the film industry, I will pretty much always be on her side. I looked at some of Kristen Stewart's films, was impressed in particular by her performance in Speak and loved her in Adventureland. I would say I am more or less a fan and can overlook the mumbling and hair touching. This is my position on young actresses in general - you want to see good acting? Well, that's called a woman of a certain age who has a theatre background. You want to see someone cute? Stop bitching about the acting.
I remain annoyed by the bum's rush Hardwick got. She made a moody, indie film that's pretty good if you can overlook a few issues of cinematic construction - and I don't know that the fact that Chris Weitz can hire a team to make CGI warewolves exactly trumps the fact that his work tends to be the cinematic equivalent of all dressed up with no place to go. Did you see Golden Compass? Fairly snoozy, right? But the moment the men realized all these idiot teenage girls were supporting their Twilight habit to the tune of a gazillion dollars they had to colonize the cash cow, so bye-bye lady director.
