two thousand eleven?

It's nearly time to start making decisions. Even though semester one hasn't even started yet, after-graduation future looms ahead. And as much as I love spur of the moment craziness, it doesn't really work that way in the middle of academia over in Auckland. The freedom that existed when I lived in Montreal, in New York... it's not the same here, where adventure is a couple of days in Wellington. Big Things need thought, application forms, money.

So I need to think. 2011 could be...
- MA in creative writing at Victoria in Wellington. It's very competitive, and so there's absolutely no guarantee that I would get in, but it's the most prestigious writing programme in the country, and I've wanted to do it for many moons now. And if I had to live anywhere in NZ, it would be Wellington.
- GDipJ (postgrad journalism) at Massey in Wellington - again, pretty competitive. And since I'm not 100% sure on journalism (it seems to make sense, though), I'd only do it if I got one of the Fairfax internships (which pays for all your fees and guarantees you a job for two years after graduation). The internship has the additional complication of meaning three straight years of no substantial travel, though.
- English Language Assistant in France. Since I've wanted to go there since my Madeline-watching days, it would be a paid job in EUROPE and also has plenty of scope for travel.
- some kind of job in the States on the 'recent graduates' programme (basically meaning they actually make it possible to get a temporary work visa without absolutely having to have a job/get a work visa at all)
- MFA in creative writing at some US/Canadian university. But only if I had some kind of amazing scholarship, because otherwise there is no way that I could afford it.
- MMHS (Masters of Museum and Heritage Studies) at Victoria - it sounds fantastic, but I'm not totally sold on the idea of being a curator/museum-y or art gallery-y person.
- (god forbid) an extra year of English-y study to get honours in English.

Or, you know, just write a couple of best-selling novels and then being capable of doing whatever I want.

future, things i want, academia, thinking
