Marty Kaplan wrote the essay below, discussing the Iraq Group Report that came out yesterday. I've been reading the IGR and I have to tell you - he's pretty close to right with what he's saying. What strikes me is that for religious types, conservatives have a remarkable lack of faith, and that for pro-Big-Business types, what conservatives have a remarkable lack of faith in is capitalism. In Iraq, by Iraqis, for Iraqis.

Kick out Halliburton, hire someone competent to restore the wells, and start distributing cash to all Iraqis, just like Alaska does with their oil money. Bring in American companies to sell 'em stuff and suddenly Al-Qaeda is looking around in puzzlement for their potential recruits, who are too busy shopping.

IMHO, that'd be a good first step.
