I have amazing friends. I really do. I love them all to death. I expected my birthday to be fairly uneventful like it had always been. You know: a few well wishes, a small party and some gifts from my parents, Jen and I would sometimes do something. I'm not used to a big deal, so I told everyone not to make a big deal.
I consider Thursday the 8th to be part of the story. That morning was housing selection at 6:30. There was a mad-dash for Cook, Becker, and Bethe House. Wendy, Cynthia, Krista, and I managed to get one of the last suites in North Becker, which was amazing. Adrian, Cameron, James, and Dylan weren't as lucky. Due to some really sucky circumstances, they got royally screwed with housing. We thought they would end up living in the Gothics. They talked about an apartment that morning, but Dylan wasn't allowed by his parents to go off-campus, so they talked about splitting everyone up. It was horrible. It put me in a bad mood all day. I was happy that I'd gotten a suite myself with my friends, but I wasn't at all happy the guys were getting split up and not getting the suite they'd wanted and worked so hard for. We'd had all these plans, and they were all falling through.
I was scheduled to work the pm shift that day, but because of the huge workload that I had to do, plus getting everyone set to leave for E-Ville the next day and trying to call some friends of the family about an apartment for the guys, I knew I had to find someone to cover my shift. During an early class I asked my friend Kaul to cover. He said yes, but I would have to work 3-4:30 because he had a class. 4:30 came, and he didn't come. Apparently he'd gotten a wrong number for me and left a message around noon saying that he couldn't cover. So at work I was overtired and overwhelmed, and getting really upset, and my supervisor Brian was being an ass about it. I didn't expect him to let me off, but he was completely unsympathetic and cold about it. If he wants to be a good supervisor and get his employees to like him someday, he really needs to work on showing more care for them. Because they were short-staffed, and because I was obviously upset, Josh let me go to housekeeping turn-down service for the evening. He told me that once I finished, I could just leave.
When I finished with housekeeping, I called Dylan to come and pick me up.
When he got there, I asked him how his housing time had gone (his time was at 9:00 that evening). He got a really serious look on his face and told me he didn't want to talk about it. But then he smiled and said that he had a surprise for me, and that we were taking a slight detour. When I asked where, he wouldn't tell me.
He then started leading me towards the footbridge. It's tradition that people are supposed to kiss there at midnight, so it was a logical place for him to try to bring me. He asked me where I thought he was taking me. "Are you thinking the footbridge?" he asked. "Possibly," I said. He told me I was right, and I tried to politely say that it was sweet, but I had a lot of work to do and I was tired. The fact that he insisted so strongly got me suspicious that something was going on.
He started leading me across the Arts Quad in the direction of the bridge, but then instead of cutting diagonally across, he cut straight across, slightly away from the bridge. He said we were just going a different route. He started leading me towards the bridge...then he took my arm, turned me around, started leading me down the hill, and said "actually, I've decided we're going this way." I was getting really confused and really suspicious by this point, and asked why we were going to West Campus. He told me not to ruin the surprise. He then pointed to all of the Gothics and told me that by the time he got to the housing site, even the Gothics were filled. They had been the last place on West Campus. "So where are you living??" I asked. "I don't want to talk about it," he told me.
When we got to West, he finally said "ok, now I'm going to tell you why we're here; we're here so that I can show you my room for next year." He led me all around West Campus, and went further and further to the end, where Cook and Becker were. But they'd been filled by 7:00 am, so I was getting confused. We got to North Becker, my dorm for next year (I'm on the 4th floor). He pointed to a dark window on the first floor and said "hey, that was the room I stayed in with my host when I came to visit two years ago." "Cool," I said. "And that's where I'm living next year. I got the very last bed in Becker. And you see those apartments over there?" he pointed across the street. "That's where the guys are all living. So they'll be right here with us." Needless to say, I was completely overjoyed. I was smiling the whole way back. But the evening wasn't over.
We got back to Mews, and Dylan followed me to my door as usual. I unlocked the door, wondering why it was locked from the inside. I turned on the lights...and there was everyone crowded into my room, with so many balloons that you could barely see the floor or the ceiling, and Wendy was holding a huge birthday ice cream cake. They all sang, and clapped, and I could only stand there, almost crying. I was so moved, and so touched that they would do that for me. We cut the cake and had a good time. Then presents came out. Eugene gave me a copy of Phantom of the Opera (the book), Priscilla gave me an adorable Beanie Baby monkey named Hookwink which shared my birthday, Wendy gave me a Josh Groban cd and a beautiful silver necklace. Then came Dylan with a rather large box. Everyone stopped to watch. I opened it up to find a gorgeous black cocktail dress that I'd seen at the mall and loved, but hadn't bought because I thought it too much money. And it was the perfect size. Apparently it was Dylan and Cam at the mall with the store clerks trying to figure out what size I was. And that was all only the day before and an hour into my birthday.
I'll update about the weekend in E-Ville sometime this week. For now, I've got to get to class. See ya!
