You know, if people are saying "be grateful or else", then I agree with you that that's a bit... odd. Not a sentiment I would tend to go along with. O.o
I'm instead in the "In the choice between an imperfect YT and a nonexistent one, I want the imperfect one" camp. I'm also in the "Don't bug the mods when they're frantically getting last-minute changes in" camp, because overhauling the system is not a last-minute change that can be made. Whereas bringing back in accidentally excluded fandoms is a change that can be made right now, and that's my personal priority. People's MMV, of course.
(Some of the fandoms on that person's list should totally be eligible, though. There's some serious math problems going on around there.)
I've seen the mods mention how much work there was for the tag wranglers, but I haven't seen comments from the wranglers themselves. Would love links! I can only assume their job was a nightmare. -_-;; *hopes with you*
hhertzof says they're not taking any more tag wranglers from now until after YT is off the ground. I assume that training people is too much investment for too little payoff at this late date. Zie has encouraged people to volunteer in January, though. I wonder how many of the current people saying they'd like to help will still sign up then? *hopes for lots*
Anyway, I think that moving nominations over to AO3 will clear up a huge part of this problem, as the existing fandoms and characters on AO3 will already be wrangled. The wranglers should only have to deal with new fandoms and characters, or people who didn't do a thorough search before nominating.
Re: Investment, I think people are invested, but my personal investment is purely in getting this thing off the ground so we can have fun. I don't feel like I need to take away someone else's nominated fandom to be "fair". I might O.o at them for nominating it, and I certainly won't offer to write it, but it's not my job to look out for them, and it doesn't hurt me to have them do their own thing.
That's probably where I differ from a lot of people, because many seem to be very invested in the idea of YT as a "rare" fandom challenge, whereas many of the fandoms that have always been eligible for it (Onmyouji, Clover, Vorkosigan Saga, etc.) have seemed like pretty lively places to me. You know, compared to my old 3 people fandoms with 2 fics ever, one written by me. ^_^
I still think this conversation is better had after YT, when the usual post-YT discussions go up. That's probably when it would have the most positive impact and seem the least reactionary. *shrugs* But oh well, I've invested way more time in reading up on this than I should have, so it's off to clean house! *whips out duster*
I primarily wasn't impressed with the "this should be easy, so I'm saying you ought to do it now" attitude. I mean, YT eligibility has never been easy. Certainly not when we have a major code change on our hands before signups can even start.
The thing is, I'd be glad to have this conversation... in January. Right now? It's already too late for this year. It was too late by the time nominations started. The system was already in place.
So yeah, the wanking makes me go O.o a bit. Except for the people who lost a fandom they nominated for what they feel aren't legitimate reasons, everyone else doesn't really have a stake in this. And those people have a complaint process to use. Many of them have even used it - successfully.
WELCOME TO MY HEAD. IT GOES ROUND AND ROUND IN CIRCLES. WANT A RIDE?
I GOT OFF, OKAY? I GET DIZZY AFTER A WHILE. ^o^
Most of the discussions about how much work the tag wranglers ended up is flocked, so I can't link, unfortunately.
Wow, even just the one was clear enough! I did assume a huge amount of work was going on in the background, which made me very reluctant to ask the mods to ask the wranglers to do anything. I checked my fandoms, nodded, and moved on.
Which makes me wonder how much mod firmness on these issues this year has to do with possibly trying to protect the wranglers from doing anything they don't absolutely have to.... *ponders*
Hey, btw, my house is really dusty. When did this happen?
IS IT POSSIBLE TO GET OFF? ... meeting up with each other and mating
Yeah, I read that that way. /facepalm/
Last January! I honestly wish someone had offered a genius plan last year after YT ended. This coming January also works, for next year. Anything in between mid-October and December 25 is... revealing a lack of awareness about how hard how many people are working right now and how little they need another monkey wrench thrown into the works. (Or should that be a spanner? Now I'm mixing my metaphors.)
I haven't seen to many other complaints/criticisms this time around, but I've been busy lately, so I probably just missed them.
