Drabble: Christmas Gift

Dec 01, 2011 20:40

Jack loved Christmas. He always had. The gifts, the drinks, the decorating- he was a fan of it all.

Elizabeth didn’t have any furniture in her house really, except for a bed. Which was all you needed, really. She’d spread a large quilt on the floor and they ate their Christmas dinner on top of it. Cheese, bread, wine, a pastry. She’d never had food that tasted so delicious. It was like Jack had sprinkled magic all over the house and she could finally taste food again after the blandness of the past year.

Her baby slept peacefully in the cradle as they ate. Elizabeth turned the gift that Jack had brought her over and over in her hands. It was a delicate vase, intricately decorated with small flowers. It was wrapped in a thick fur stole. Both were, no doubt, very expensive…and stolen.

Elizabeth wrapped the stole around herself and watched one of the candles drip slowly.  She hadn’t known he was coming- he just appeared in the night, like he always did. She slipped the delicate pearl earring out of her ear, a quiet smile spreading across her face. “I have a gift for you, too.”

Jack’s face didn’t change as she carefully began weaving the small earring into his hair. He had many trinkets: crosses, dice, coins. But he would never, not even if he lived forever (and he intended to) take the pearl earring out of his hair.
