Mordaedil a.k.a. Fulgore84 today recommended that I write next about "the Origin of Magic and the planes" or "Landmasses and deities". I offered a compromise of "Deities and the planes" since they are somewhat related.
In the beginning there was the One. The One was a thing without purpose then, and without form. Sensing itself, the One spoke saying “I am.”. And so it was. The One decided to first quantify the self, but found that it could not. The One was alone in the void, and lacked a thing to compare itself to. The One decided then that it would compare one part against the other instead, and so again spoke: “I Was, I Am, and I Shall Be.” Thus, Time came to be. “Let there be a Place, so that my Purpose and Form may be discovered.” So it was that the stars sprang forth from the One, and the Planets.
“Let every part of that which is I be separated from every other, so that which is I can compare and contrast with and against Myself.” Then the One became Few. The Few looked about themselves at what the One had caused to be, and saw that it was good. Five was the number of the Few, each a singular piece of the One. Each of the Few saw that it had a Purpose and a Counterpoint, save the first who lacked an opposite.
The First of the Few spoke to the others, saying “I am Impartial. I have no Form, yet my purpose is clear: I shall abide and Observe until the Restoration of the One. I have no Contrast, and so I will keep record of that which is; for the One.”
The Second of the Few spoke saying: “I am Divinity. My Purpose is Clear. I will be the Shining Beacon of Hope. Nobility and Courage shall be my Standards, and I shall strive against my Counterpoint so that the One shall know me when the Restoration comes.” And so it was.
The Third of the Few spoke saying: “I am Abomination. My Purpose is Clear. I will be the Darkness which Consumes. Pain and Terror shall be my Cry, and I will strive against my Counterpoint so that the One will know me when the Restoration comes.” And so it was.
The Fourth of the Few spoke saying: “I am Diversity. My Purpose is Clear. I will be the Changing of Ways. The New and Different shall be my Passion, and I will strive against my Counterpoint so that the One will know me when the Restoration comes.” And so it was.
The Fifth of the Few spoke saying: “I am Stasis. My Purpose is Clear. I will be the Ties that Bind. Order and Stability shall be my Goals, and I will strive against my Counterpoint so that the One will know me when the Restoration comes.” And so it was.
Having all declared their Purpose, the Few found that they could not abide the presence of their respective Counterpoints. The First of the Few spoke to the Others saying: “Let us cause to be combinations of Ourselves so that we may work the Will of the One through them. We will make them Lesser than Ourselves, so that they may not be repelled by Us.” The Few then made four entities known as the Coalescent. Each had a combination of Purposes in a lesser form, so that they could strive freely amongst themselves, and work the Will of the One.
The Coalescent then gathered in a place apart from the Few to decide what they should do. After a time they agreed that the work that the One had started could be taken further; that all that was could be compared to itself so that the Few could know it.
A longer time passed and the Coalescent decided that all that was, being too large to observe all at once, needed yet more beings to share in the work. The Coalescent, with the help of the Few, made yet lesser entities to share in the Will of the One.
From the Few sprang forth the Eternals. From the Coalescent the Mortal races were conceived. Those created by the Few, like the Coalescent before them, were of such purity that they were still bound by the Will of the One. Such were made beings embodying the primal forces of the Places of which they watched over. They numbered Five, like the Few themselves. The Mortal Races however, being of such mixed origin were confused, and knew not the One. Such were made the Creatures of the Air, and the Ground, and the Seas.
Having thought that they had failed, the Coalescent sought to remove the Mortals, and try again. The One was at the Core of the Coalescent, and the Mortals seemed to have been ruined. Before they could enact their will, the First of the Few rebuked them saying: “Nay, nothing that was made shall be unmade, for the One has set us to compare and contrast every part of the One against every other. These Mortals are also part of the One, though they know it not.”
Chastised, the Coalescent decided to try again. They felt that at least some of their creations should know the One as they did. Again the Coalescent strove together, and such were made the sentient mortals. These mortals could sense the Will of the One, but only distantly. Encouraged, the Coalescent took some of the sentient mortals and from them were made the lesser Immortals.
In those days, the Coalescent roamed the lands with the creatures they had caused to Be, and they saw that where ever they went the land about them changed according to their fancy. The creatures that they had made often suffered or died in the presence of the Coalescent, for the very ground would rise up, or the waters became air.
Much troubled by this, the Coalescent gathered once more in a Place apart, and sought what to do. Some of the Coalescent sought to remain forever apart from the things that they had caused to Be, so that all would not be destroyed simply by being near unto it. Others felt that the lands and the creatures were theirs to do with as they wished, and saw no reason to leave. Eventually a compromise was reached. The Coalescent would remain apart from the Place that had been made, and work the Will of the One through those who chose to follow them...
