Normally I pay as much attention to the Grammys as I do to the Academy Awards, which is to say not at all; however I was pretty stoked when I was told that Christopher Tin's "Baba Yetu" won at this past week's annual Grammys for "Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s)". It is the first song made for a video game that won such an award, and personally awesome to me because it was the opening theme to
Civilization IV; a game that I consider one of the greatest ever made.
Baba Yetu itself is actually sung in
Swahili; less known is the song is actually a reciting of
The Lord's Prayer in that language.
I also always loved the official video for the song and game. The video essentially shows, in a very abbreviated, game like form admittedly, where we have been as a species and where we are hopefully going. It is true we are a stupid, arrogant, tribalistic primate species, but we are also one with unlimited potential that could achieve things still undreamed of.
