Nothing surprises me anymore, especially in regard to ability of people to be easily offended by the most trivial and unintentional of actions or words and their response to the supposed affront being taken to ludicrous ends, especially when they believe they have the right not to be offended.
And especially when the state also believes they have that right...
Take the example of 20 year veteran teacher José Reyes Fernández of Spain,
who has recently found himself in trouble with the Spainish courts and national police. Why? Because he talked about the local delicacy,
jamón serrano. What is jamón serrano? A dry-cured Spanish Ham, with Ham being the key word. See one of the students took offense to the word jamón (ham) being so frequently spoken to describe, well.. ham.
One would imagine no one could really be offended by ham, that is of course unless your religion hates pigs, and there is no offense like a religious offense. Apparently a Muslim student was personally offended that the teacher spoke so highly of a ham dish because of Islam's disdain toward pork products. It is not mentioned if José continued to speak prominently on the virtues of bacon after being informed that the hearing about the tastiness of headcheese burns the ears of Muslims everywhere, but the boy's parents reported him to the cops none the less. Now Mr. Fernández is under a denuncia (criminal report that is investigated as such) for the psychological ill-treatment of a student in the context of xenophobia and racism.
Yes, seriously; but what can you expect from the religion of the perpetually outraged.
