Yesterday would have been
Carl Sagan's birthday and in celebration
some use the opportunity presented by this fact to promote science and especially astronomy. So in that vein I post another video, this one is from the chapter titled Wanderers, (which is the intro to his
Pale Blue Dot book).
In brief Wanderers talks about the human need to explore, to look for and push new frontiers, based in our very essence for as long as humans (and really our hominid ancestors) have existed. Much of our history is a history of exploration and because of it we have learned so much as a species. Even today in our technological, settled world, a result of our success as explorers, all the Reality Shows, Netflix, XBoxes, and iPads in the world may now retard and dull but cannot truly extinguish that basic call we have to wander, to explore, to push our boundaries every further. These days there is one frontier left, but it is the ultimate one and that is where our future lies.
