Draw Mohammed Day - That's a killin'

Remember Draw Mohammad Day? An event started by Seattle cartoonist, Molly Norris in response to Comedy Central censoring a South Park episode mentioning Mohammad? Well, in brief, the day went forward and there was much sacrilegious Mohammad art, but Norris herself withdrew from the event beforehand feeling it brought her unwanted attention. Unfortunately this decision did not save her from recently being place on an "hit list" calling for her execution.

Yemeni-American cleric Anwar al-Awlaki is calling for the death of Norris and eight other cartoonists, authors, and journalists for their "blasphemous caricatures" of Mohammad, during an interview by an Al Qaida magazine, "Insight" (A terrorist rag meant to recruit Muslim Youth in Europe and America).

Anwar al-Awlaki himself is quite the character, born in Las Cruces New Mexico and an American citizen, the cleric, now hiding somewhere in Yemen working to recruit for Al Qaida. He is believed to have help inspire Nidal Malik Hasan, the Fort Hood, Texas mass-murderer, which he later called "a man of conscious" and a hero. In other words, a fanatical scum of the Earth who believes his supposed divine insights gives him the right to inspire brutality and murder against anyone that doesn't live in his narrow, 7th century desert tribal worldview. No doubt there will be some impressionable young man emboldened by his latest sermon execution orders, indoctrinated to disregard their own humanity and gleefully murdering some "uppity heathen" woman for the "abomination" of drawing anthropomorphic household items that happen to be named "Mohammad" (despite the fact there are 15 million people with that same first name).

The saddest part of this whole terrible ordeal is these people get away with this sort of behavior because average Joe and Jane Muslim stay conspicuously silent about the cowardly fanatics in their mist, filling vulnerable youth with promises of paradise if they only sacrifice themselves in some homicidal attack on these cleric's (and of course their oddly impotent god) behalf. Because of their refusal to speak out, they imply consent and the result is some innocent woman now has to live her entire life in dire fear, another victim of religious fanaticism and the cowardly silence by the religion's vast sane majority that enables it.
