New Doctor Who Season

Well some folks may already know, the new season of Doctor Who began in Britain this last Saturday. Of course, thanks to the power of the Intertubes, some of us already seen it.

Spoiler Free

The first episode of the new season debuted Matt Smith as the 11th Doctor, and of course I had my reservations. Not just because I felt David Tennant did such job, but because each Doctor needs to be unique in his own way and that takes a quality actor to pull of. I also wonder if he was a bit too young.

Still I was ready and excited about the fact we got a new Doctor. Tennett, like I said, was great but by the end of the specials on 2009, it felt that the story of the 10th Doctor had been told and it was time to move on. Now we have a new incarnation, backed with a new head writer and executive producer (Steven Moffat), I was hoping for some new energy and a new direction.

I got both.

In the premiere episode Matt Smith managed to not only capture the essence of what it means to be the Doctor, but he already succeeded in establishing himself. His Doctor is both eccentric and energetic. He also gets agitated and can become reckless if things are not going right, making him a balanced and realistic character.

AS for the new companion, Amy, she seems already to have more potential and personality then some of his recent ones (looking at you Martha), still not sure if she will be as good as my favorite, Donna, but the potential is certainly there.

Anyway anyone else see this? What did you think of the first episode? The new Doctor? Amy?

sci fi, doctor who, sci-fi
