“Little Ones”

Stomping ants on sidewalk
cracks, and staining Rebok
sneakers. Childish wonder
takes a morbid shudder.
Youth and innocence are not
twin eggs, displayed and bought
but shells sought in the sand-
lines related, but bands
of color never match.
A scraggly vegetable patch
of clean and sinless parsnips
are as similar to infant turnips
as innocence and youth are to
each other. A pas-de-deux
of tabula rasa means only
a lack of behavior morally
inclined, not cognizant of pain-
of ants and rusty stains.
