17. Birds of a Feather by Jacqueline Winspear
This was the sequel to Maisie Dobbs, which I read a month ago or so. It also takes place in Interbellum London and was more of a traditional PI-Mystery novel than the first in the series. Maisie is hired to track down the daughter of a grocery store owner who has gone missing, and during the course of the investigation 3 of the daughter's friends turn up dead. There's a lot of moralizing about how horrible the "Great War" was - it was interesting to read about the war and its effects, but it seems like some of the criticism is really aimed at a contemporary audience, and I already think the war is horrible.
ANYWAY. I ordered the 3rd book in the series (Pardonable Lies) from Amazon a few weeks ago because it was at a "bargain book" price, and I'm really looking forward to getting into it. At the end of Birds of a Feather a love triangle is introduced and I'm really curious to see how it resolves, because both of the potential suitors seem like appropriate matches for Maisie. We'll see.
