I was taken off guard, waiting for Mel to drop the other shoe - you know, find a way to twist around her "thanks" and stick it to me somehow.

And she did!

Brian, Justin is going to say this anyway, so I might as well beat him to this so you get it in stereo - your life IS Justin's life. You've actually accepted that you and Justin want the same things and you're acting in concert to move toward your shared objectives, and here's proof that you're even beginning to take that shared work for granted - which is a HUGE step!

And, surprise surprise, your nemesis with one comment sets you back two steps.

Because I mean, isn't Melanie right? Justin's too good for you? and you're just a selfish asshole who doesn't deserve the love you receive? It's obviously not that you actually deserve love operating functionally in your life. God forbid you start to think you might. Melanie's smart enough to know that getting you to question these things is much more damaging than anything she could ever say.

Seriously. They teach these tricks in law schools. "First thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers." Even Shakespeare knew what was up there.

I know you mean well, but Justin cannot possibly want to be taken for granted. And no matter what anyone says, putting this burden on his shoulders is unconscionable, even for me (yes, I know myself well). It's not right for him to always sacrifice the way he does. I've tried to teach him to be selfish, he always says he learns many things from the master, but he hasn't learned this lesson yet.

The only thing you're right about is Mel's intentions. See, the one time I give her the benefit of the doubt, I am wrong!

Interesting observation about law school. I don't know many lawyers intimately, so I'm not sure about this particular truism. I'll have to check with my sources.

You're not doing that, you know that's not what I'm saying.

I've tried to teach him to be selfish, he always says he learns many things from the master, but he hasn't learned this lesson yet

Justin's a great student - he follows the "do as I do, not as I say" rule. By that rule, he's learning from you very well.

I'll have to check with my sources.

Heh. I know lots of lawyers. They're slick.
