Withnail and I is this film. I got into it through following Paul McGann's filmography after seeing him as the Eighth Doctor, but it's an extraordinary film in its own right.

AHA. that makes sense: i was a film major many years ago (it's still a great love of mine) long after this came out, so I may well have heard of it then... I'll look it up! it sounds interesting. <3
