Day 2 June 20, 2006:
I was up late last night watching TV in my little efficiency unit when right at about 2:00AM the smoke alarm for the whole building went off. Everyone had to evacuate. Suspecting this was a false (or at least superfluous) alarm, I took my time. I put on some clothes, packed up my laptop, grabbed my wallet, and went downstairs and outside. All of the other guests were out there as well in varying states of confusion and undress. One group looked like something out of a Jeff Foxworthy stand up joke (the type that’s likely to take the anniversary of Dale Earnhardt’s death off from work as a day of mourning). I had a feeling this group has something to do with the alarm going off. The fire department came and investigated. After a little while we were given the OK to go back inside. Certainly enough the firefighters asked who was in room 212, and the rednecks responded. I knew it. They were probably trying to distill moonshine, or they were lighting their farts on fire, or something else equally inane. I went to bed and woke back up at about 8:15 very tired. I went to the Verizon call center and took my place in my cubicle. Today is so far much more interesting than yesterday. I actually was involved in one call incident with one of our units. The California office sent candy and some junk with the Actiontec logo to the center for me to pass out to everyone. I took a little trip to a nearby dollar store, bought two plastic trays, and came back to the center. I loaded up the trays with candy and company schwag, and walked all through the call center giving stuff away. My wrists are completely shot. I haven’t done that kind of thing since I was a waiter 7 years ago. At least now just about everyone here knows who I am and knows I’m the go-to guy for any issues with the Actiontec router. Tonight I’ll probably be staying in and hoping the fire alarm stays silent.
