A few things before bed. I just started and finished a great, interesting book,
The Perks of Being a Wallflower. It's the
story of a timid, odd kid's first year of high school, and it's full of all the angsty things which come with that territory; quite literally: sex, drugs and rock and roll . . . and suicide and abortion. All the good stuff. It's similar in tone and interesting narrative choice to another young adult book (YA to librarians) I stumbled across last year,
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, except while the latter is told through the point of view of an autistic 15-year old, the former is a series of letters written by a socially awkward kid to some unknown person. Both are worth checking out, and since they're written primarily for a younger audience, they are quick and easy reads. This is the end of my book report.
More importantly, I watched Letterman tonight, as I do most nights. In the interest of full disclosure, I also watched the first half of Oprah today because Dave was her guest. But the couple from the movie
Once was on his show tonight singing one of the songs from the movie. There names are Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova in case anyone is interested. I didn't catch the name of the song, but it was lovely and sweet. I really wanted to see the movie when I first saw a trailer a few months ago, and hearing an actual song from the film has rekindled my interest. I'm putting those of you in the area on notice: I'll let you know when it comes to town, because one of you is coming with me.
I'll leave you with a quote from Mark Twain, who also made an appearance on Letterman tonight (his second in a week!): I come from modest means. My family was so poor, if I hadn't been born a boy, I would have had nothing at all to play with.
